Catalonia's recent heavy spring rainfall has led to a significant recovery from its drought crisis, prompting the regional government to announce the lifting of water restrictions. The Sau reservoir, which became symbolic of this crisis, has refilled to over 70% capacity. This change allows the affected areas, particularly near Barcelona, to transition from high alert to pre-alert status, alleviating constraints on urban and agricultural water use. However, the government urges caution, keeping the drought response plan in pre-alert mode as a precaution.
Water levels across the Ter-Llobregat system, which supplies over six million people, have more than doubled over the past month, now sitting at 64 per cent capacity. This improvement is critical in moving municipalities from 'alert' to 'pre-alert'.
The Sau reservoir symbolizes the drought's impact, notably with its exposed church. Now, after spring rains, it stands at over 70 percent capacity, allowing the government to declare the drought crisis over.
