"BARCELONA lifeguards have called off an extended 27-day strike on Thursday, August 28, after finally reaching an agreement with the Barcelona City Council. The lifeguards had been protesting in a strike organised by the CGT Union to secure a more beneficial labour agreement and to obtain more job stability. The nearly month-long strike reached an end after the lifeguards were able to reach an agreement with the Council that landed them improvements to their working conditions and action to meet their most important demands."
"The deal drafted by the parties provided 26 additional working days as well as more staff during the low season, and more working days during peak season, an increase of 21 days total. An additional condition of the agreement is that the lifeguard cabins must be fully staffed from the third weekend of May and all throughout peak season weekends. According to the Council, these measures will cost the city approximately €300,000 more, on top of the €2.5 million the lifeguard service already costs."
"On the part of the Barcelona City Council, the agreement and the resolution of the conflict was warmly welcomed. In a city that is famous in no small part due to its beaches, it's imperative to have a content lifeguard staff, especially during peak season when they are needed to constantly monitor the waters as they flood with visitors and residents enjoying the sun and sea."
