In March 2023, the Austin Transit Partnership selected UNStudio, HKS, and Gehl to design Project Connect, an expansion of Austin's public transportation system. The initiative, which is voter-approved, emphasizes public participation and community feedback. Aimed at addressing the challenges posed by Austin's rapid growth, the project focuses on creating a human-centric transit system with 15 light rail stations over nearly 10 miles of rail. It includes enhanced pedestrian pathways, an expanded tree canopy, and transit hubs that promote connectivity and social interaction, embodying Austin's character and identity.
The project prioritizes people-first infrastructure and dynamic public spaces, aiming to reflect the community's character through feedback and strategic urban design.
