Planning Commission OKs removal of east side pecan tree - Austin Monitor
Briefly

The Austin Planning Commission approved a variance allowing the removal of a pecan tree to facilitate the construction of a large affordable housing complex. Proposed by nonprofit LifeWorks, the complex will cover 13 acres and offer around 600 housing units, including supportive housing. The pecan tree, classified as a protected heritage tree due to its size, required city review for its removal. Despite community concern over tree preservation, the development aims to address affordable housing needs amid rising costs in Austin.
The variance was granted at the request of nonprofit LifeWorks, who owns the property at 819 Tillery Street that the tree sits on.
Another 240 would be at or below 80 percent of the Median Family Income, which in Austin is $104,200 for a family of four.
