The Ethics Review Commission reviewed complaints against two elected candidates for City Council who failed to submit personal financial statements on time. While they acknowledged their errors, the commission opted against penalties, indicating a focus on clarifying rules for future candidates. Both candidates expressed a desire for improved guidance for new entrants in the electoral process, suggesting that educational strategies would be more beneficial than punitive measures. This highlights a potential gap in electoral compliance support for first-time candidates in the city.
I believe that recommendations from this commission making it clearer to first-time candidates, new candidates, of the rules and procedures in place when running for office could be very helpful.
A sanction of someone who ran for office and lost is not going to teach future candidates necessarily about how to be successful in their future campaigns.
