Incentives for customer-owned batteries among new programs in Austin Energy's pipeline - Austin Monitor
Briefly

Austin Energy is actively implementing its Climate Protection Plan, aiming to enhance sustainability and resilience in its power grid. The utility is introducing programs to compensate customers for integrating battery storage systems into the energy grid, facilitating a Distributed Energy Resource Management System. This aligns with existing demand response initiatives, such as the Power Partner thermostat program, which incentivizes customers financially for assisting the grid. Currently, a 30% federal tax credit is available for battery system investments, underscoring the push for renewable energy sources like solar power.
We already have 15 MW of batteries in our service territory, but we are learning how to leverage them for the most benefit at a reasonable cost.
The project is among several in the works laying the groundwork for a robust Distributed Energy Resource Management System, which would see a proliferation of local generation sources across the city.
