The City Council's Audit and Finance Committee reviewed the Austin Police Department's recruitment efforts, revealing an alarming increase in the vacancy rate from over 3% to nearly 18% from FY 2021 to 2024. The audit, led by Jasmine Triplett, indicated that APD lacks an effective recruitment strategy and specific, measurable hiring goals. While the department attempts to recruit from military institutions and high schools, it struggles with extensive application processing times and undefined metrics for success. This has raised ongoing concerns about response times and public safety staffing.
The objective of our audit was to determine if APD is effectively, efficiently and equitably recruiting and hiring sworn staff, said Jasmine Triplett.
The first finding is that ... APD does not have an effective recruitment strategy to address their hiring issues, Triplett said.
According to the briefing, APD's vacancy rate increased from just over 3 percent to nearly 18 percent from Fiscal Years 2021 to 2024.
Triplett applauded some of APD's efforts at military institutions, historically black colleges, and local high schools.
