Under Coach Dan Quinn, the Commanders were expected to revive their defense based on his success with the Seattle Seahawks. Though Joe Whitt Jr. was appointed to carry forward Quinn’s vision, which emphasizes aggressive play and turnovers, the team faced challenges in its first season. While the offense flourished with rookie Jayden Daniels, the defense was hindered by a lack of personnel, specifically at cornerback, resulting in poor performance in defensive turnovers and interceptions, falling short of Whitt's goals and causing frustration.
The reborn Commanders experienced unprecedented success in their first season under new management. But that was mainly due to the resurgent offense, led by rookie phenom Jayden Daniels.
Whitt articulated his vision for the defense in his introductory press conference: Structure doesn't matter. The main thing that matters is are we going to arrive violently and turn the ball over.
