The Houston Astros are moving Jose Altuve from second base to left field, a decision influenced by their offseason talks about Alex Bregman. Initially met with skepticism due to Altuve's lack of experience in left field, the Astros' management is now leaning toward making this transition permanent. Manager Joe Espada highlights that Altuve will play the majority of games in left, allowing creative positioning of teammates, though the final decision on the everyday lineup remains to be solidified. This strategic move reflects changing team dynamics and player roles as the season approaches.
"Right now, the plan is for [Altuve] to play the majority of his games in left field," Espada stated. "The days that he plays second base opens the door for [Alvarez] maybe getting a start in left field, someone getting a DH day. So this move allows us to be creative and do stuff like that."
As Houston brass continued to paint a Bregman reunion as a long shot, they kept getting Altuve work in left field. Even when Bregman signed in Boston, the Altuve/left field experiment continued to progress.
