Sir Tom Stoppard died peacefully in England at age 88, surrounded by family. United Agents said he will be remembered for his works, their brilliance and humanity, and for his wit and love of the English language. Stoppard won five Tonys for Best Play, first for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1968) and most recently for Leopoldstadt (2023), and shared the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Shakespeare in Love (1999). He revised the final draft of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade under the pen name Barry Watson shortly before production. Born Tomáš Sträussler in 1937 in Czechoslovakia, he fled to Singapore as a child, later lived in India, and settled in Nottingham by 1946. He received tributes from artists including Mick Jagger and King Charles III.
