Tom Hiddleston to Cross the Pond for Much Ado About Nothing
"Broadway is getting its first extremely Bri'ish Shakespeare production in a while, courtesy of director Jamie Lloyd (Sunset Blvd.). Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell's glowingly reviewed Much Ado About Nothing is coming from the West End to New York. The production will play at a to-be-confirmed Shubert theater this fall for ten weeks only. It will mark Hiddleston's second time on Broadway after previously scoring a Tony nomination for the Lloyd-directed Betrayal. Atwell is making her debut."
"The production is notable for being an originally British Shakespeare interpretation coming to Broadway in a time when most of Broadway's Shakespeare has leaned distinctly American. In recent years, there's been a Denzel Washington-starring Othello, Rachel Zegler's Romeo + Juliet, and Daniel Craig as the titular Macbeth. All of these premiered on Broadway and received mixed to negative reviews by critics. Meanwhile, the last truly acclaimed Shakespeare on Broadway was 2014's Twelfth Night, which was produced by the London's Globe theater"
Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell will lead Jamie Lloyd's Much Ado About Nothing transferring from the West End to Broadway for a ten-week run this fall at a to-be-confirmed Shubert theater. The move marks Hiddleston's second Broadway appearance after a prior Tony-nominated role in Lloyd's Betrayal and marks Atwell's Broadway debut. The staging brings an originally British Shakespeare interpretation to Broadway at a moment when several recent Broadway Shakespeare productions have leaned toward Americanized approaches. The last widely acclaimed Shakespeare transfer to Broadway was the Globe-produced 2014 Twelfth Night. The transfer aims to reintroduce British Shakespearean theatrical sensibilities to the Great White Way.
