Martin Wittfooth creates enigmatic, surreal paintings that meld flora and fauna into uncanny tableaux, including a parrot in a too-small cage, jellyfish above fungi and ferns, and a spotted octopus within a bouquet. Wittfooth divides time between Savannah and Brockville and plans a permanent move to Brockville this year while completing larger commissions ahead of a solo exhibition scheduled for spring 2027 with Hashimoto Contemporary. Wittfooth values both cohesive bodies of work and singular pieces to sustain conceptual continuity and incubate new ideas. Wittfooth will mentor at the Quarantine residency with Yuko Shimizu, a program that reinforces rapid bond formation, the importance of community, and the difficulty artists face maintaining connection amid isolating work practices and social media.
