The Vaults Under the Lincoln Memorial Are Finally Opening to the Public
Tickets are available for the Lincoln Memorial Undercroft Museum, opening June 25 in time for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Large tours on opening day are sold out. The undercroft is an underground vaulted storage space beneath the Lincoln Memorial, converted into a 15,000-square-foot exhibition area with a grid of concrete columns. The museum presents how the memorial was built and how the site has shaped American perceptions of Abraham Lincoln. The $69 million project is funded through a public-private partnership beginning in 2016, with NPS and the National Park Foundation contributing $26 million and $43 million. The project also upgrades elevators, adds restrooms, and expands the bookstore.
"Beyond the exhibition space, the project has upgraded the Lincoln Memorial's elevator systems, build new restrooms and an expanded bookstore."
