In Uganda's Bidi Bidi refugee settlement, the new Performing Arts Centre serves as a sanctuary for young refugees. Amidst the backdrop of Africa's largest refugee camp, this initiative nurtures creativity and offers hope. Edward Byemba and his students, who once faced personal struggles, now utilize music as a means of expressing themselves and transforming their lives. The centre stands as a testament to resilience and community spirit, inviting the youth of Bidi Bidi to dream, collaborate, and heal through the arts.
The music carries past them to the shrubs that surround the circular majestic building and the neighbours going about their lives, the more than 250,000 refugees who live in the 250 sq km Bidi Bidi refugee settlement, the largest refugee camp in Africa.
He used to get into fights, take alcohol, smoke cigarettes and other things... People laughed at me, and I was unhappy... about 75% of the 1.7 million refugees in Uganda are women and children.
