Tate Modern's Turbine Hall its next major new artwork
"Born in Beirut and now living in Paris, Atoui is known for creating multisensory installations. His pieces often include invented and intricately engineered instruments, made in collaboration with other artists, composers and makers, which double as sculptural objects. Often featuring stuff like glass, water and ceramics, Atoui's imaginative instruments are activated by touch, breath and motors, creating immersive and interactive installations."
"Tarek Atoui has captivated audiences internationally with his boundary-pushing approach to sound. Blending music, technology, sculpture and performance, he is a truly cross-disciplinary artist whose work references current social, historical and political realities. Architectural space plays an important role in Atoui's ongoing investigation into sound and vibration, and we can't wait to see how he engages with audiences within the public space of Tate Modern's iconic Turbine Hall."
Tarek Atoui, born in Beirut and based in Paris, will install a large-scale, multisensory commission in Tate Modern's Turbine Hall in 2026. The project is commissioned by Hyundai and will be on display from October 13, 2026 to April 11, 2027. Atoui creates installations using invented, intricately engineered instruments made with collaborators; these function as sculptural objects. Materials often include glass, water and ceramics, and instruments are activated by touch, breath and motors. He combines these sounds with environmental recordings and computer-generated audio to expand listening beyond hearing to include touch and sight. Architectural space is integral to his investigation of sound and vibration.
