Sid, a first-generation Indian migrant, uses art to explore identity shaped by colonial histories. Growing up in Kenya and later moving to Australia, he initially viewed art simply as expression, but later recognized its deeper role in reconciling his experiences. His work critiques colonial paintings, illuminating their roles in enforcing social hierarchies. By repurposing these visual languages, Sid aims to reflect contemporary realities and offer recognition to those navigating multicultural identities, challenging the notion of fixed truths in history and self-understanding.
Art was always a constant presence, encouraging exploration and play, leading to various forms of storytelling, whether through music or painting.
They weren't just paintings; they were declarations of dominance, reinforcing hierarchies of race, class and power.
I'm questioning what those images meant then and what they mean now, as part of a process of reinterpreting visual narratives.
I hope it offers a sense of recognition, of seeing something that speaks to the complexity of that in-between space.
