"The Castro Theatre, which showed film for over a century and was one of the region's last remaining movie palaces, is currently under renovation and remodeling by its new operators Another Planet Entertainment. Controversially, the Bay Area-based live music promotion company replaced the Castro's theater-style raked floor and seating with flat tiers, outfitted with sliding rows, to accommodate a multi-use format."
The Castro Theatre will reopen with a lineup of concerts and events in 2026 featuring artists such as Lucy Dacus, Perfume Genius, Santigold, the Breeders, Father John Misty, and the Format. The schedule includes live music, drag, comedy, game shows, community events, and planned film screenings, with the Frameline Film Festival set for June. Tickets go on sale Friday, Nov. 7. The schedule follows a sold-out, 20-date residency by Sam Smith. Renovations by Another Planet Entertainment converted the theater's raked seating to flat tiers with sliding rows to enable a multi-use format, drawing controversy.
