"The three met in Roumagoux's Thursday morning Open Studio class at Oregon Coast Community College, two hours when a dozen students paint and Roumagoux roams the room sharing the wisdom honed over her decades as both an artist and teacher. "As people started loosening up and telling their life stories, as happens in a good studio class, lo and behold, we told what ages we are," Roumagoux recalled."
""These students have kept their love of painting and visual arts a part of their life and now have the time to spend in the studio," Roumagoux said. "All three of us come from different backgrounds and life experiences, and we all felt the same about our ability to make art. Age didn't have a damned thing to do with it. We all felt the same inside as we did when we were much, much younger.""
Three artists—Sandy Roumagoux, Bobby Flewellyn, and Scottie Howard—will exhibit work in 85 & Over: Roumagoux, Flewellyn, Howard at Olive Street Gallery beginning Feb. 6. Scottie Howard abandoned painting in college and returned to art after more than 60 years, taking part in her first exhibit at age 85. The artists met in Roumagoux's Thursday morning Open Studio class at Oregon Coast Community College, where Roumagoux shares decades of teaching and artistic experience. The shared realization of their ages inspired the exhibition. The artists come from varied backgrounds and maintained their commitment to visual art into later life. The Newport Visual Arts Center supported the show.
