New fund helps museums make purchases at Frieze New York
"Antonia Marsh, the director of Soft Opening, says that this is "Joanne's first museum acquisition; for an emerging artist, it's a major moment". Nicole Estilo Kaiser, the director of Public Gallery, says that "we're excited by the many opportunities and wonderful placements that have emerged from this presentation"."
A new fund launched at Frieze New York enables US museums to acquire works for their collections at the fair. The Sherman Family Foundation Acquisition Fund provides $50,000 each year to support artists and galleries exhibiting in the Focus section, which features solo stands from galleries established fewer than 12 years ago. The Baltimore Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum will receive acquisitions in the fund’s first year. The Brooklyn Museum acquired two works by Bettina Grossman from Phenomenological New York and an additional untitled work from the same series. The Baltimore Museum of Art acquired three works by Reika Takebayashi, Seba Calfuqueo, and Joanne Burke. Each artist receives an unrestricted $5,000 award.
