"I really, for better or worse, know no other way to write than to write comedically,"
"I've tried, but it doesn't feel authentic to me. I really do have a political pulse that is built into all of my work, but the language of it is comedy. I think the potential impact of it is greater if you start out by laughing and then getting hit"
"will be just like the Back to Africa movement!" "Except I don't think that worked out,"
Profile Theatre presents Tiger Style!, an absurd, irreverent satire by Mike Lew directed by Peter Kim that centers on Asian American identity and the model minority myth. Siblings Albert and Jennifer Chen embark on an "Asian Freedom tour" from Irvine to San Marino to the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, confronting family, cultural expectations, and racial inequality. Their journey includes incarceration in a Chinese prison where musical performance becomes a matter of survival, encounters with racist antagonists, surveillance by elders and CCP saboteurs, and parents who have microchipped them. The season emphasizes comedy as a means to confront political and personal issues.
