MFA Boston Denies Targeting Employees of Color in Layoffs | Artnet News
""All along, we took steps to ensure that cuts would not disproportionately impact any groups based on their background or identity," director Pierre Terjanian said in a statement reiterating that the layoffs were made to address the museum's structural deficit, projected at $13 million. "One third of our entire staff identified as people of color prior to the restructuring-and those numbers are the same today.""
"But among those who lost their jobs were assistant curator of Islamic art Nadirah Mansour, assistant curator of Native American Art Marina Tyquiengco, and curator of fashion arts . Other eliminated roles include the head of learning and community engagement, the senior manager of equity programs, and the senior director of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility. (The layoffs, unlike the last round in 2020, were made without executive pay cuts or offering any early retirement packages.)"
The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston cut 33 employees, about 6.3 percent of staff, to address a projected $13 million structural deficit. The layoffs included the institution's only Black, Muslim, and Indigenous curators: assistant curator of Islamic art Nadirah Mansour, assistant curator of Native American Art Marina Tyquiengco, and curator of fashion arts. Other eliminated roles included head of learning and community engagement, senior manager of equity programs, and senior director of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility. The museum stated that one third of staff identified as people of color both before and after the restructuring. The layoffs were implemented without executive pay cuts or early retirement offers. An open letter and a Change.org petition called for reinstatement of several affected staff.
