Belgian artist Luc Tuymans has created two significant works, Heat and Musicians (2025), to be displayed in a 16th-century church on San Giorgio Maggiore island. These paintings will replace Tintoretto's The Last Supper and The People of Israel in the Desert, which will be restored. The project, commissioned by Benedicti Claustra Onlus, aims for Tuymans to connect with the space's sacred history rather than reinterpret Tintoretto. Additionally, Tuymans has produced a contemporary illuminated manuscript for the church's lectern, enriching the existing collection.
"Tuymans's intervention for the Basilica, which is a unique and unrepeatable occasion, should not be misunderstood as a reinterpretation of Jacopo Tintoretto's works. That is not the aim of the project..."
"Rather, he was invited to engage with the sacredness of the space and its history, just as Tintoretto once did centuries ago."
