Lagos art fair defies macroeconomic headwinds to reach double figures
"It speaks to the experience of a city like Lagos, and its origins as a land of mangrove-a tree that is synonymous with resilience and adaptability. The city has taken on those characteristics in ways that are less obvious to the undiscerning eye."
"There was no shortage of talent amongst artists in the art scene. Nigeria has had phenomenally talented artists working in the country for numerous decades. I wanted to build this bridge that would bring collectors, artists and curators to experience what was happening in Nigeria and to experience the rest of Africa on home soil."
Art X Lagos reaches its 10th edition under the theme Imagining Otherwise, No Matter the Tide. The theme invites envisioning collective futures and uses Lagos’s mangrove imagery as a symbol of resilience and adaptability. The fair persevered through economic volatility, a Nigerian currency crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic, and a softening art market to reach its tenth year. The founder positioned the fair as a catalyst to surface Nigeria’s long-standing artistic talent and to connect collectors, artists and curators. The fair energises and amplifies the regional art ecosystem, attracting roughly 10,000–12,000 annual visitors and cultivating new collectors.
