"I tend to spend half my time doing the portraits, and half the year experimenting. In recent years, that side of it's been slightly replaced by playing with technologies. In 2017, he produced his first bronze sculpture, a self portrait cast from a model made with Google's new 3D virtual reality painting application, Tilt Brush."
"I think the idea of the selfie, Snapchat, Jonathan being a portrait artist-it all came together into this nice, neat little package. Benjamin Wymer, who heads Snap's Paris AR Studio, explained how Yeo's background in portraiture aligned perfectly with Snapchat's platform and culture."
"Yeo has painted famous people for three decades. On a video call, he described portraiture as his day job. Its static nature has historically frustrated him, leading him to pursue experimental work alongside his commercial portrait commissions."
Jonathan Yeo, renowned for his portrait of King Charles III, has spent over a decade experimenting with technology alongside his portraiture work. Frustrated by the static nature of traditional portraits, he has explored collages, 3D virtual reality sculpture, and film festival judging. His collaboration with Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel led to a partnership with Snap's French augmented reality unit. Together they created an exhibition called "Spectacular: The Art of Jonathan Yeo in Augmented Reality," which debuted at Centre Pompidou in Paris and now makes its U.S. premiere at South by Southwest in Austin, featuring seven animated portrait reproductions with enhanced AR experiences.
