Juxtapoz Magazine - Richard Prince Brings "Posters" to Marfa
Briefly

Richard Prince's solo exhibition 'Posters' at Hetzler | Marfa showcases works created between 2014 and 2024. As a leading figure in appropriation art, Prince utilizes everyday American culture products to explore history and narratives. The exhibit features large canvases inspired by 20th-century mailorder advertisement posters, reflecting themes from the late '60s counterculture—a blend of political slogans, modern art reproductions, and playful visuals. This artwork aims to make cultural attitudes transparent, encapsulating the juxtaposition of revolutionary student protests and the traits of hippie self-indulgence through everyday imagery.
The large canvases show reproductions of advertisements for mailorder posters, as were often found at the back of magazines in the second half of the 20th century.
The motifs of political slogans and far-out art in the form of cheap posters are singled out and chosen by the artist. They find their origins in the hippie head-shop culture of the late '60s.
