'Just a regular guy': Gene Hackman enjoyed a quiet, simple life in Santa Fe, until tragedy struck last week
Briefly

Renowned actor Gene Hackman, known for his Oscar-winning performances, embraced a peaceful life in Santa Fe, New Mexico, away from fame. He engaged with the local community, enjoying art, Pilates, and biking alongside his wife, Betsy Arakawa. Friends described him as unassuming and genuine, forging lasting friendships and participating in community events. Tragically, Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, were recently found dead at their home, prompting an investigation. Despite his private nature, his legacy is deeply felt in Santa Fe, highlighting the contrast between his Hollywood stardom and serene lifestyle.
"He was a pretty low-key individual even though he was someone who had amazing stories to tell about Hollywood and other celebrities," longtime friend Stuart Ashman said.
"He told me his name and I said, 'Of course I know who you are,' Ashman said. 'He just smiled that big smile of his and our friendship went from there.'
"Gene tells me, 'You have to take it. I want you to have it.' That's the kind of person he was."
