""The camera was being pointed in the mirror so you got an angle, and I was naked, because I was part of what they were doing. So that's how I got to do the selfies with the mirror.""
""You say, 'Fuck you. I'm good and you're wrong,' this is who I am, this is what I do, and this is what I care about.""
Joan Semmel's Soho loft features her self-portrait, "Mirrored Screen" (2005), reflecting her exploration of narcissism in popular culture. Over 20 years ago, she captured fellow artists and dancers in locker rooms using a point-and-shoot camera, inadvertently including herself in the images. This approach provided a unique perspective on self-identity and body representation. Semmel's work has gained renewed interest, highlighted by recent exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and an upcoming show in Brussels.
