San Jose Jazz partners with Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana to host an alebrijes workshop at MACLA in San Jose. Instructors Pilar Aguero-Esparza and Rayos Magos teach participants to create carved, brightly colored Mexican folk creatures using paint and cardboard. Participants can make real or imagined animals inspired by traditional alebrijes. Alebrijes originated with Papier-mâché artist Pedro Linares in Mexico City in the 1940s and are now mostly associated with Oaxaca. Artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera helped popularize the form. The session, titled Fantastic Animals, takes place Saturday, Sept 13 at 1:30pm for $35.
