"I've put books opposite each other that I think will make for an interesting conversation,"
"These shelves contain a multitude of non-aligned ideas."
"Three different books by unrelated authors can shape my understanding of how the mind works and how that affects life on the planet,"
"There was always the anxiety on a Tuesday night: did we have our library books ready to return?"
Es Devlin constructed a 50ft illuminated library set in a slowly revolving reflecting pool on Miami Beach, holding about 2,500 volumes. Tables surround the pool with 33 seats per side and rotating inner seats so strangers sit opposite and read paired books annotated by the artist. Duplicate editions from the artist's collection were copied with handwritten annotations and provided by Penguin Random House and Strand Books. The installation was commissioned by Faena Art for Miami Art Week and anchors a three-part presentation extending into the Faena Cathedral and Project Room. The work juxtaposes non-aligned ideas to encourage conversation and the holding of opposing truths.
