Date set for Trafalgar Square's next plinth
"reflects many of today's Londoners"
"She is not an idol to venerate or a historic figurehead to commemorate. She is a woman striding forward into our collective future with ambition and purpose. She is a Londoner who represents the city's spirit."
"I have London to thank for many milestones in my practice. The city has truly supported my artistic development and is the best possible home for this powerful figure."
Lady in Blue is a bronze sculpture patinated in Lapis Lazuli blue that depicts a young woman intended to reflect many of today's Londoners. The work will be unveiled on Trafalgar Square's Fourth Plinth in September. The Fourth Plinth commission places internationally renowned artists in the heart of London and is supported by the mayor of London. Artists are independently chosen by the Fourth Plinth commissioning group while the public was invited to comment on a shortlist. Fifteen works have been displayed on the plinth since 1999, beginning with Mark Wallinger's Ecce Homo. Lady in Blue presents a contemporary everywoman striding into a collective future with ambition and purpose and is framed as a representation of the city's spirit.
