Contrarian art giant Jim Melchert found hope in the cracks - 48 hills
"It was a little bit like people couldn't see the forest for the trees with Jim. They knew him as being one thing, and then he goes and becomes the head of the NEA [National Endowment for the Arts],"
"Think about how much more joyous the art world would be if we gave the attention to those that are really the binding glue in the arts community."
Where The Boundaries Are at di Rosa Center for the Arts San Francisco displays more than 60 Jim Melchert works through January 3, 2026. The retrospective spans clay, conceptual art, performance documentation, broken tile, and other forms that reflect Melchert's movement between disciplines. Melchert died in 2023 at age 92. Curator Griff Williams, a close friend, curated the show and emphasizes Melchert's resistance to single-category labeling and his roles including leadership at the NEA. Melchert studied painting at the University of Chicago and later pursued ceramics with Peter Voulkos, even after an initially hostile reaction to Voulkos' work. A monograph titled Where The Boundaries Are was released concurrently with the exhibition.
