Ian Hamilton Finlay, a multifaceted artist known for his contributions as a poet, sculptor, and printmaker, reshaped contemporary art with his unique approaches. Although he passed away in 2006, a new exhibition at the National Galleries of Scotland celebrates his centenary. Patrick Elliot, curator, emphasizes the significance of both small works and grand projects in Finlay's oeuvre. In addition to this main exhibition, a series of eight simultaneous exhibitions worldwide in May 2024, alongside the publication of 'Fragments', highlights his enduring influence in the art community.
"There's 50-odd years of complicated, interesting, intellectually stimulating work... the small works-the tiny little prints and postcards are just as meaningful as big sculptural projects."
"Ian Hamilton Finlay is an artist whose eclectic work was complemented, and to an extent eclipsed, by his unpredictable and occasionally confrontational personality."
