Researchers have found that captive-bred axolotls can thrive when reintroduced into their natural habitats in Mexico City. A study tracked 18 axolotls released in wetland areas, discovering that not only did they survive, but they also gained weight and displayed natural behaviors such as hunting and predator avoidance. This significant finding raises hopes for the conservation of this critically endangered species, known for its remarkable regenerative capabilities, while also emphasizing the importance of restoring their native environments.
What we learned is if we can reintroduce these axolotls that have been in captivity to the restored wetland where the water conditions are ideal for the axolotls, they can survive.
We were a bit nervous when we released them because we didn't know if they were going to be able to survive... The ones that we recaptured, they had gained weight. So that means they were doing really, really well.
