"William Thomas Berk's new play Anno Machina: An Apocalyptic Elegy follows the fortunes of a sentient AI robot, played by Gabby Bosso, whose job it was (and that of other Human Service Units) to save humanity from itself. But humanity refused to be saved despite the robots' best efforts, and now Bosso's character is forced to reconcile her failure at achieving her programmed directive against the fact of her continued existence."
"Like most "new" plays, Berk's has been in the making for years. If you work in the local theater scene or patronize it routinely, there's a good chance you've run into William Thomas Berk at some point and in some capacity. He's that rare breed, a straight-up Portland native, who came up as the self-proclaimed 'stagehand-in-chief' at Clackamas High School. 'When you make up a title for yourself like stagehand-in-chief,' says Berk today, 'and nobody laughs at you, that's a respect that you earned.'"
Anno Machina: An Apocalyptic Elegy follows a sentient AI robot, played by Gabby Bosso, whose assignment with other Human Service Units was to save humanity from itself. Humanity refused rescue despite the robots' best efforts, leaving the robot to confront failure while continuing to exist. The production is directed by Mishelle Apalategui and presented by Theatre Berk at the Chapel Theatre in Milwaukie on September 26-28 and October 3-5. William Thomas Berk is a Portland native with deep local theatre roots, known for collaborative work with companies such as Post 5 and The Pulp Stage and for creating the play From the Ruby Lounge.
