""It was quite an ordeal," Seleshanko said. "Fortunately, we did already have the funds in place to put in a new system, so we just pushed that along very quickly. We were able to get it done before opening.""
""Originally, the auditorium was pretty gilded by modern standards," Seleshanko said. "We've restored it true to the era, including stencils and decorative trim.""
""preserving and honoring the theatre's heritage while transitioning for the next 100 years as the hub of performing arts in Coos County.""
A rehearsal at the 101-year-old Liberty Theatre revealed a strong gas smell, and inspection found the theater's ancient heater unsafe, prompting an urgent replacement before opening. Director Kristina Seleshanko secured funds already in place and expedited installation of a new heating system to meet the holiday schedule. The season's double feature of A Charlie Brown Christmas and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever marks the theater's first performances after a $4 million, decade-long restoration. Restoration work repaired stucco, restored rooftop copper domes, refurbished interiors with new seating, accessibility upgrades, rehearsal space, dressing rooms and a green room. The 1924 theater earned a 2024 Oregon Heritage Excellence Award and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2023.
