Beatriz Gonzalez, indefatigable force in Colombian art, has died, aged 93
"I don't want to be Botero or only a lady who paints,"
"This is an artist."
"From the outset, she pursued a different kind of figuration, breaking conventions about what was expected of women artists,"
Beatriz González (1932–2026) was a Colombian artist, writer, curator, educator, and intellectual whose practice emphasized distinctive figuration and social engagement. Born in Bucaramanga, an early teacher's praise affirmed her artistic identity. She studied briefly architecture at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and then fine arts at the Universidad de los Andes. She developed a figuration alternative to dominant abstraction and contemporaries like Fernando Botero, prioritizing originality and breaking expectations for women artists. She contributed significantly to Colombia's museum sector and curated exhibitions. Major retrospectives are traveling internationally. She died in Bogotá on January 9 at age 93.
