Bahar Behbahani Brings the Persian Garden to NYC
Damask Rose: A Gathering took place on Governors Island during an unseasonably warm afternoon. Three shallow fountains were transformed by handwoven antique carpets and crocheted canopies in pink, red, and purple. Bahar Behbahani created the event as part of Governors Island Arts’s Interventions series, working with an associate curator and producer. Over two dozen community practitioners and cultural groups convened for four hours, combining storytelling, communion, and rest. Across the river, artist studio visits at Mana Contemporary occurred alongside installation of a Gaza monument in Paterson. Additional New York art updates included a long-term presentation of Sarah Lucas’s Venus Victoria at the New Museum, rare early Basquiat works at The Bishop Gallery, and Neue Galerie’s merger with the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
