April Waters’ installation, Sheroes: Water, Women and the Environment, showcases larger-than-life oil paintings honoring women like Cindy Sheehan and Vandana Shiva. Open until March 31 at Salem on the Edge gallery, Waters’ work reflects her activism for the environment and women’s rights, motivated by her personal journey from a conservative upbringing in Southern California to a more progressive identity in Boulder, Colorado. Experiencing different cultures inspired her to lift her voice, leading her to admire and depict influential women in her art.
"I am an activist. I feel really strongly about the environment and women's rights," Waters, the Salem artist, said.
"I found role models. I was a nurse and sort of bent towards caring for people, and at the time I was painting rivers and creeks and the environment..."
