"Returning a work of this scale and significance to public view is an important moment for the museum and for all audiences interested in Renaissance art."
"The tapestry, which offers the opening scene of Dante's Inferno, was made between 1547 and 1549 by a Florentine workshop established by Duke Cosimo I de' Medici."
The Minneapolis Institute of Art is set to restore The Meeting of Dante and Virgil, a significant mid-16th century tapestry, thanks to a €25,000 grant from TEFAF. This tapestry, the only early Medici piece in a public collection outside Italy, has been in storage for 70 years due to its fragility. The restoration will involve cleaning, stabilization, and reweaving, along with a new display system. A custom frame will also be created for future loans to other institutions.
