Yuge Zhou's installation, 'Trampoline Color Exercise,' presents a vibrant digital collage of gymnasts flipping on pink trampolines, abstracting their movements into colorful ripples. This work reflects on themes of globalization and national identity, especially poignant given current political divides. Zhou, born in China but residing in the Midwest, channels her exploration of emotional distance and cultural contrasts, particularly highlighted during the pandemic. The artwork will be showcased on Times Square's electronic billboards as part of the Midnight Moment series, allowing viewers nightly access to this three-minute spectacle.
Born in China, Zhou has long explored the emotional, psychological, and geographic distance between her chosen home in the Midwest and the country of her birth. Themes of separation, loyalty, and cultural contrasts undergird much of her multidisciplinary work.
'Trampoline Color Exercise' was created over the past few years amid intense political and international divisions, and now it feels especially timely. At its heart, the work is a celebration of globalization and a reflection on allegiance.
