A Trio of Bob Ross Paintings Raises More Than $1 Million for Public Media
"A trio of Bob Ross paintings has brought in more than $1 million in support of public media. The works were offered by nonprofit organization American Public Television (APT), on the heels of its record-breaking sale in November, which (briefly) set a new auction record for the late painter. Included in Bonhams's " " auction on January 27 were three paintings that Ross created on his celebrated TV series, The Joy of Painting, which still airs on public television."
"Another snow-coated mountain shows up in Valley View (1990), which Ross created on the first episode of his 21st season. The verdant scene is anchored by a host of pine trees, their greenery reflected on the still surface of a lake. The canvas is inscribed with "2101 book," indicating its inclusion in the 21st volume of his instructional book series, also titled The Joy of Painting . It realized $203,700, against a $30,000-$50,000 presale estimate."
Three Bob Ross paintings sold at Bonhams on January 27, raising over $1 million for public broadcasting. The works were offered by American Public Television (APT) and vastly surpassed presale estimates. Change of Seasons (1990) led the sale at $787,900, about 13 times its $60,000 high estimate; it was painted on the 11th episode of season 20 and depicts a surging river, trees, snowy mountains and a radiant sky. Valley View (1990) realized $203,700 and is inscribed "2101 book," linking it to the 21st volume of Ross's instructional series. Babbling Brook (1993) fetched $279,900. Proceeds will benefit public broadcasting, which saw federal funding slashed by $1.1 billion in 2025.
