"Doubts about the painting's authenticity arose early on, with Jacob-Baart de la Faille stating in 1930 that it was a very beautiful work, but not by Van Gogh."
The Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo is showcasing the fake Van Gogh painting Seascape at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer until 21 June. Helene Kröller-Müller acquired the painting in 1928 for $18,000, believing it to be authentic. However, doubts about its authenticity arose soon after, with art historians questioning its provenance. Jacob-Baart de la Faille, a notable art historian, downgraded the painting in 1930, stating it was beautiful but not by Van Gogh. The display coincides with a recounting of its acquisition and the ensuing debate over its authenticity.
