During a family visit to the Boijmans Van Beuningen museum in Rotterdam, a child caused significant damage to the painting "Grey, Orange on Maroon, No. 8" by Mark Rothko, worth approximately €50 million. The museum confirmed visible scratches on the painting's surface due to the child's actions. Conservation efforts are being sought, with plans for future display. The museum has not disclosed details regarding the painting's valuation or conservation costs, nor will they provide images of the damage.
Rothko's work has sustained damage: a number of visible scratches in the unvarnished paint layer. It was caused by a child who scratched the underside of the work in an unguarded moment.
Conservation expertise has been sought in the Netherlands and abroad. We are currently researching the next steps for the treatment of the painting. We expect that the work will be able to be shown again in the future.
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen provides no information on the valuation of the painting, the possible costs associated with the conservation of the painting or the further handling of this matter.
The painting's monetary value is estimated at more than $50 million.
