YouTube is upgrading old videos to HD and 4K automatically - but you can opt out
"That old YouTube video you love and keep going back to watch? It's about to look a lot better. Also: Long YouTube video? This free AI tool finds the good parts for you - here's how The TV screen is YouTube's fastest-growing surface, the company says, so it's making some improvements. In a blog post detailing several changes coming to the platform for TV viewers, YouTube announced that it will use AI to generate higher resolution for videos."
"Creators will be able to keep control over their content, YouTube added, noting that the original file and resolution will stay intact. In addition, creators can opt out of the new enhancement (which YouTube is calling "super resolution") if they don't like how it makes their videos look. Viewers will have the choice to watch in the original resolution or the new resolution."
YouTube will automatically upscale videos under 1080p to HD using AI called 'super resolution'. Auto-scaling to 4K is planned in the near future. Creators retain original files and resolutions and can opt out of the enhancement. Viewers can choose between the original and upscaled resolutions. The change primarily affects older uploads from roughly 2005–2010 and should not impact modern 4K standards. Additional TV-focused updates include a thumbnail file size increase from 2MB to 50MB to support 4K thumbnails, shopping QR codes for instant product pages, and immersive homepage previews. The rollout follows recent AI features for Shorts creators.
