World's first humanoid robot games begin in China DW 08/15/2025
Briefly

The World Humanoid Robot Games feature over 500 humanoid robots from 16 countries competing in various events including soccer, boxing, and medicine sorting. The event aims to advance research and test new approaches in robotics technology. Despite experiencing several failures, such as falling during competitions, participants view these experiences as valuable for future developments. China's increasing investment in robotics and artificial intelligence reflects the government's commitment to showcasing its advancements in the field.
"We come here to play and to win. But we are also interested in research," said Max Polter, a member of the HTWK Robots football team from Germany.
Better to have a robot fail at the kickboxing event than after investing millions for real-world applications, one participant said.
The robots crashed into each other and toppled over repeatedly during football matches, while another fell over mid-sprint during running events.
Chinese officials made humanoids the "center of their national strategy," according to a paper published by the International Federation of Robotics.
