A recent Cornell University study revealed that AI writing assistants, designed mainly by Western tech firms, hindered writers from India more than American counterparts. While both demographics benefited in terms of speed, Indian participants often revised AI suggestions more frequently due to cultural mismatch, leading to reduced productivity gains. The study highlights how Western-centric AI models lack the linguistic depth to accommodate diverse cultural nuances, effectively homogenizing writing styles and disadvantaging a significant portion of global users.
Researchers found that while both Indian and American writers benefitted from AI tools, Indian writers faced challenges due to cultural discrepancies, diminishing the effectiveness of the suggestions.
The study showed that AI writing tools, developed primarily in the West, do not capture the linguistic nuances of non-Western cultures, leading to a homogenization of writing styles.
