Generative AI tools enable creation of extremely realistic fake receipts within seconds without specialized knowledge. AppZen reported that about 14% of fake receipts in September 2025 were AI-generated, up from none the previous year. Ramp detected more than $1 million worth of fake invoices in a three-month period. Detection software has begun identifying AI-created fakes, and the rapid emergence of these receipts has increased the workload for corporate financial controls and verification processes.
