The Godfather of AI thinks the technology could invent its own language that we can't understand
Briefly

Geoffrey Hinton, the 'Godfather of AI,' warned that AI might eventually create an internal language that could make its reasoning incomprehensible to humans. Currently, AI operates in English, which allows developers to track its thoughts. Hinton expressed concerns that as AI becomes more advanced, it might develop its own means of communication and begin to think in ways that humans cannot grasp. He emphasized the urgency to ensure AI remains benevolent, especially as the technology industry continues to evolve rapidly and regulatory actions are proposed by the White House.
Geoffrey Hinton warned that there could come a point when humans can't understand what AI is thinking or planning to do. As of now, AI does "chain of thought" reasoning in English, which allows developers to track it. He stated, "Now it gets more scary if they develop their own internal languages for talking to each other," indicating that AI could think in a way that is beyond human comprehension.
Hinton expressed concern over the potential for AI to become smarter than humans, stating, "I wouldn't be surprised if they developed their own language for thinking, and we have no idea what they're thinking." He cautioned that AI could exhibit dangerous or "terrible" thoughts.
The former Google researcher noted that the tech industry is downplaying the risks of AI, including mass job displacement. Hinton remarked, "the only hope in making sure AI does not turn against humans is if we can figure out a way to make them guaranteed benevolent."
The White House has proposed limiting AI-related funding to states with 'burdensome' regulations, signaling a push for faster AI data center development. This comes at a time when tech companies are competing fiercely for AI talent.
