The AI coding apocalypse
Briefly

The rise of AI tools has generated concern among junior software engineers regarding their employability. Polls indicate a significant percentage of young engineers feel threatened by AI's efficiency in coding tasks traditionally performed by entry-level workers. Despite AI's capabilities, experts argue that creative thinking and problem-solving skills inherent in skilled engineers cannot be replaced. Thus, while AI increases productivity, it also increases demand for experienced developers who can effectively leverage AI's output, signaling a transformation rather than an end to coding careers.
"AI can't support what it doesn't know," says James Stanger, the chief technology evangelist at CompTIA. "I still don't think that it is something that can fully replace a good developer."
"The increased coding output from AI is also increasing the demand for and value of experienced, creative developers to interpret and put the AI's work to good use."
Despite AI automating some basic tasks, engineering requires creative thinking to solve problems and expertise to read code, which AI cannot replicate.
"Many obituaries have been written to mourn the death of coding, but engineering is more than writing code."
