ScotRail has initiated a six-month pilot program to test Starlink internet services on select rural train routes, supported by the Scottish government and Clarus Networks. This initiative aims to address the digital divide in Scotland's Highlands by equipping six class 158 trains with Starlink technology to provide reliable connectivity where traditional mobile networks fail. The trial operates between key locations, including Inverness and Wick, and emphasizes the importance of digital connectivity for community growth and public service accessibility in remote areas of Scotland.
This project marks a major step forward in closing the digital divide for rural rail routes. By harnessing the power of Low Earth Orbit satellite technology, we're able to deliver fast, reliable connectivity in some of the most remote parts of the UK rail network.
As set out in last week's Programme for Government, the Scottish government places great emphasis on digital connectivity. It supports Scotland's economic resilience and helps everyone, regardless of location, benefit from public services.
